Walks and Treks around Amed Beach

(Update Mey 05 '08)
The hills and mountains behind Amed provide many apportunities for hiking. Just take a pair of goos shoes and follow the little paths on the slopes of Mt Seraya. Amed is also a good place to start treks to Mt Agung. Most hotels can arrange them for you, although it is lukely to cost more than if you arrange it directly in Selat (approxumately Rp 500.000 for one or two persons).Be very spesific as to time of depature, the kind of equopment you'll be bringing, and the qualification of the guides. You'll normally leave in the middle of night drive to the foot of the mountain and hike for four hours to reach the top of the mountain at sunrise. The huke us sternuous and demanding. The descent is even harder make sure you are in a giid shape. Bring a light pack with an ample supply of water, energy food, and a torch. Another good hike from Amed is the ascent of Pura Lempuyang through the village of Ngis.

Amed Beach - What to Do at Sea

(07mei08)
Amed Beach has some of the best coral of Bali, and is a possible entry point to the dive sites of Tulamben. Excellent sites for snorkelling and diving are found at the entrance of Amed village, which has good shallow corals suited for beginners and some steep wall for more advanced divers. In the bay of Lipah, a shallow shipwreck provides for easy diving and good snorkelling. At the southern end of Amed Beach, the little rock outcrop of Gili Selang has excellent coral. The currents around the islet are extremely strong; make sure you go there with a guide and only if you are good diver. Less daring sea lovers will enjoy snorkelling or diving around the bay before Selang. Most hotels in Amed provide snorkelling equipment and can indicated good spots accessible from the beach. To really enjoy the sea and the best coral, hop on a boat and go around fishing, swimming, or snorkelling for about Rp60,000/h. Bellow is a selection of professional dive shop in the area. All offer great trips and PADI course for beginners or experienced divers. Costs are around US$50 to 70 for dive trips in the area, which typically include two dives and lunch. Excursions to other sites around Bali can also be arranged.

 Diving & Snorkelling

(08mei08)
Snorkelling is excellent at several places along the coast. Jemeluk is a protected area where you can admire live coral and plentiful fish within 100m of the beach. there's a relatively recent Japanese shipwreck near Aas, offshore from Eka Purnama bungalows, and coral gardens and colourful marine life at Selang. As in much of Indonesia and the Indian Ocean, the reefs here suffered from 'coral bleaching' in the 1998 El Nino event, and some impressive structures like table corals have been lost. Almost every hotel rents snorkelling equipment for about 20,000Rp per day.

 Trekking

(Update Mey 22 '08)
Quite a dew trails go inland from the coast, up the slopes of Gunung Seraya (1175m) and to some little-visited villages. The countryside is sparsely vegetated and most trails are well defined, so you won't need a guide for shorter walks - if you get lost, just follow a ridge top back down to the coast road.
