Ever wondered why so many artists have been captivated by Bali to the point of never wanting to leave. Find the answer around the Sidemen, at foot of Mt Agung. The neighboring village of Iseh was home to painter Walter Spies between 1939 and 1942. The most influential foreign artist living in Bali, Spies created dreamlike scenes with lush vegetation and surreal lighting. His paintings find a strong echo in the magic of Sidemen. |

Around 200m east of the main bay near Padangbai, a complex of three temples sits on the top of the hill, with a good view of the bay. The biggest is Pura Silayukti, that has a side door with peculiar carvings of monkeys on guard. It is said that in the 11th century, Empu Kuturan, who introduced the three temple system to Balinese villages, lived and meditated in this temple. At the back is Pura Telaga Mas, with a small basin filled by a holy water spring. Fifty meters to the south is Pura Tunjung Sari with its three roofed meru and three smaller shrines. |

While the beaches of Padandbai and Candidasa have lost their splendor, the area harbours two quiet, unspoiled beaches. Biastugal Beach is nestled in the small and calm white sand bay of Pantai Biastugal (or Pantai Kecil), within walking distance to the western end of the main bay of Padangbai. Sun worshippers can laze undisturbed in the sole company of a few food stalls. |

A famous legend details the founding of Tenganan. In the days before the Majapahit invasion of Bali, King Bedalu ruled the island. One day his favourite horse went missing, and the king offered a large reward for anybody who found it. The horse was eventually discovered dead near Tenganan and the king decided that he would give the local people the land near where the horse was found; in fact, he would donate the area within which the stench of the rotting animal could be smalled. One of the king's ministers was sent to the village to adjudicate, and he and the village haedman set out to decide to boundaries. Incredibly, the smell of the horse could be detected over a huge area. The lines were duly drawn and the minister departed. At this point, the devious village headman took out from under his clothes the piece of rooting horse meat with which ha head fooled the minister. The limits of the village lands are still the ones set at that time, and cover more than ten square kilometers. |

The village of TENGANAN (admission by donation) is one of the Bali Aga communities of the island and adheres to traditional ways. Rejecting the Javanization of their land, the caste system and the religious reforms that followed the Majapahit conquest of the island in 1343, the Bali Aga or Bali Mula, meaning "original Balinese", withdrew to their village enclaves to live a life based around ritual and ceremony. Today, Tenganan is an extremely wealthy village and the only place in Indonesia that produces the celebrated gringsing cloth. |

The creation of this special place in 1970 was the long held dream of its founder, the late Ibu Gedong Bagus Oka, a remarkable woman well known internationally for her work on interfaith and women's issues. Neatly described as "an on going experiment in simple, non violent living" the community embodies the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. There are about 30 members of various faiths and origins, although most are young people from poor families of rural Bali. |

Candidasa's temple, Pura Candidasa (entry by donation), is on the hillside across from the lagoon at the eastern end of the village strip. The fishing village, just beyond the lagoon, has colourful prahu drawn up on what's left of the beach. In the early morning you can watch the boats coasting in after a night's fishing. The owners canvas visitors for snorkelling trips to the reef and the nearby islets. |
