 Lembongan Island Overview

lembongan 6.jpg Lembongan Island Overview Information Initially “discovered” by surfers lured by its challenging barrels, Nusa Lembongan is now a popular getaway destination near Bali.

 Lembongan Island – The Areas

A slight information about the areas of Lembongan Island.

 Gianyar and around

Formerly divided into a multitude of kingdom, the area witnessed vicious internal battles and power struggles, followed later by the incursion of the invading Dutch. During the fourteenth century, the first Majapahit capital was in Samprangan, now a small village just east of Gianyar and; in the following centuries; each of the towns of the area had is own royal dynasty; the now sleepy Klungkung suburb of Gelgel once of ruled a kingdom starching from the island of Sumbawa in the east to Java in the west. Evidence of those ancient courts remains in the Taman Gili Klungkung, the Puri Agungin Amlapura and the Puri Gianyar. Once the focus of the area that they dominated, these small relics of past glory is now surrounded by busy administrative and market towns with traffic pouring past the walls.

 Bangli

Situated between Gianyar and the volcanoes of Batur, BANGLI is a cool and specious market town and the administrative capital of Bangli district. It fits in well on any itinerary to or from Batur, but don’t be fooled by its proximity to Besakih: there are no public bemos on the Bangli-Rendang road.

 Klungkung

The busy street of Klungkung and the nearby village of craftsmen and painters are perfect for an immersion of the best of Bali’s arts and history.

 Information about Nusa Lembongan

(Update Apr 25 '08)
Most visitors come for the surf that breaks on the reefs, the quiet beach and relaxtion. The island has a range of good budget accommodation and a couple of mid-range hotels and exclusive top end resorts, mostly with beaches frontage.

 Around the coast

(28mei08)
Around the coast southwest of Jungutbatu, the glorious white sand bays of Coconut Beach (Pantai Songlambung), Chelegimbai (also known as Selegimpak) and Mushroom Bay, and the footpaths linking them, offer a wide range of attractive moderate and top end accommodation. This area is the destination for day trips from the mainland, which can disturb the peace in the middle of the day but can't detract from the idyllic white sand and turquoise waters. Slightly further afield, Dream Beach, around on the south coast of the island, has just one accommodation option.

 Jungutbatu

(28mei08)
Spread out along the west coast for well over 1km, the attractive village of JUNGUTBATU is a low key place, with losmen and restaurant, a bank, moneychanger, wartels, and a few shops selling textiles and crafts. Arriving by public boat, you'll be dropped off accounting to the tide; this could be anything up to 1km along the beach from the majority of the accommodation. With Perama, you'll come in as close to the office as they can get. The places to stay are not that obvious from the sea, but there'll by plenty of people to point you in the right direction.

 Mushroom Bay

(02june08)
This wonderful cove derives its nickname from its mushroom coral; its original name is Sanghiang Bay. It gets busy during the daytime, with a swarm of motorboats carrying the clients of Bali Hai and other adventure companies. To find some calm, walk down the cliff to the smaller, lovely cove located just before Mushroom Bay.

 That Seawed Something

(Update Jun 06 '08)
The cultivation of seawed (rumput laut) is now a well established industry, for which the shallow waters around Nusa Penida and Lembongan are particularly suitable. Because rain fall is low, the seawater maintains a high level of salinity, which is ideal for seawed growth. Small pieces of a marine algae (Eucheuma) are attached to strings that are streched between bamboo poles these underwater fences can be seen off many of the beaches, and especially in the shallows between Lembongan and Ceningan.

 Nusa Penida

nusa penida 4.jpg Nusa Penida Information Tell a Balinese person you are heading Nusa Penida and you won’t get a positive reaction. The island is renowned as the home of the legendary evil figure I Macaling, also known as Jero Gede Macaling, who is believed to be responsible for disease and floods, which he brings across to the mainland from Nusa Penida, landing at Lebih south of Gianyar.

 Toyapakeh and around

toya pakeh 3.jpg Toyapakeh and around Information Some 9km from Sampalan, the village of TOYAPAKEH is separated from Nusa Ceningan by a channel less than 1km wide but over 100m deep in places. With its lovely white beach and peaceful atmosphere, it’s the best place to stay on Nusa Penida. There’s a small daily market and a tiny mosque serving the town’s Muslim population. There’s accommodation at Losmen Trang, which has five basic rooms right next to the beach, with attached mandi and squat toilet, and also serves simple meals. There are plans for a new set of bungalows just behind the beach in Toyapakeh.

 Around Nusa Lembongan

(update 5 Agustus 2008)
For a trip around Nusa Lembongan, it’s best to walk or cycle in a clock wise direction, avoiding a lengthy climb up out of Jungutbatu to the south. The road is tarmac most of the way, although a bit rough in places. Allow three to four hours to walk around the island, two hours to cycle, or less than an hour by motorbike. Add on more if you want to explore Nusa Ceningan.

 Around Nusa Penida

(update 6 Agustus 2008)
By far the best way to see Nusa Penida is by motorbike – ask at your guesthouse for rental details – although you’ll need to be confident on very steep terrain. The island is a maze of country lanes, and signposts are few, so make sure you start early and have plenty of fuel. A full circuit is only about 70km, but allowing time to visit the major attractions and to get lost a few times, it takes most of a day. The road between Toyapakeh and Sampalan is the busiest on the island and roughly follows the coast; traffic elsewhere is much lighter.

 Sampalan

sampalan 3.jpg Sampalan Information SAMPALAN, on the northeast coast of the island, is Nusa Penida’s largest town, and has a shady street of shops, a bemo terminal, a market, and the only post office, hospital and phone office on the island. the town is spread out along the beach, and its highlight, the Pura Dalem, close to the cemetery near the football field, has a six-metre-tall gateway adorned with five leering Bhoma and a pendulous-breasted Rangda.
