 Candi Dasa Diving and Snorkeling

Just off the coast, a group of Candi Dasa’s small islands offers excellent diving, although it’s not suitable for beginners as the water can be cold and the currents strong.

 Amed Beach

Amed beach has some of the best coral of Bali, and is possible entry point to dive sites of Tulamben. Excellent site for snorkeling and diving are found at the entrance of Amed village, which has shallow corals suited for beginners and some step walls for more advance drivers. In the bay of Lipah, a shallow shipwreck provides easy diving and good snorkeling.

 Amlapura and Around

Travellers interested in history can pay a brief visit to Puri Agung, the residence of last Raja of Karangasem. It was two attractive entries, with carved pagoda-like gates. At the Maskerdam building (a corruption of Amsterdam), two large photo of last raja are on display beside other worn and weathered portraits of the past. Most of the rooms are empty, and the discolored building echoes the faded grandeur of the old kingdom.

 Tirtagangga and Around

Tirtagangga will surely makes you feel like in the past. Enjoy the royal bath at the Water Palace and their unique history.

 Cultural Discoveries around Sidemen

Several shop around Sidemen’s main road, in the centre of the village, advertise ikat (or endek in Balinese) and songket weaving. From there you can ask to visit the workshop of the weavers. Alternatively, this can be arranged from any of the hotels and home stay in the area, Lihat Sawah can even organize the weaving class from-a one day initiation to three weeks of deep learning.

Walks around Selat, Iseh and Sidemen

The pristine hills, valleys and rice fields in the area offer endless possibilities for walking and trekking. All the hotels and home stay listed offer a choice of guided walks from several hours, another alternative is to use one of the local guides available at Puri Agung Inn, below is selection of great walks.

Mt Agung: Climbing the Sacred Mountain

Sidemen owe its spiritual quality to the proximity of Mt Agung. Often hidden from sight, especially during the rainy season, its summit shines a fearful aura as it suddenly materializes above the clouds.

Besakih: the Holy Navel of Bali

Built on the southern slopes of Mt Agung, at an altitude of about 100m, Besakih enjoy spectacular views of the south of the island, especially from the back of the main temple, the Pura Penataran Agung.

Tulamben – Become an Underwater Naturalist

Tulamben is mostly known fro its shipwreck. The Liberty, a U.S. nationally warship, was hit by a Japanese rocket in 1942. It laid stranded along the coast until 1963 eruption of Mt Agung pushed into sea, where it has remained to this day, less than 40m from the shore.

Tulamben – Trekking the Slope of Mt Agung

Besides its underwater wonders, you can also explore the fantastic landscape of Mt Agung.

 Tulamben – Dive Sites

The Liberty wreck lies almost parallel to the beach, on a sandy slope about 30m offshore, and is encrusted with soft coral, gorgonians and hydrozoans plus a few hard corals, providing a wonderful habitat for around three hundred species of reef fish that live on the wreck and over a hundred species that visit from deeper water. A lot of the fish are very tame. The wreck is now pretty broken up and there are plenty of entrances letting you explore inside. Parts of the wreck are in shallow water, making this is a good snorkeling site, too.

 Tenganan Rituals, Ceremonies and Festivals

Tenganan’s inhabitants pursue a complex round of rituals and ceremonies.

 Tenganan Crafts and Skills

The most famous product of Tenganan is gringsing or double ikat, a highly valued brown, deep-red, blue-black and tan cloth, which Bhatara Indra, the god of creation, supposedly taught the women of Tenganan to weave. It can take many years to make one piece, and it is prized throughout Bali, as protection against evil. Many religious ceremonies require the use of the cloth; for example, during the tooth-filling ceremony a piece of it is placed beneath the head, and during part of cremations it is wrapped around the coffin.

 The Beaches of Padang Bai

If you find the main beach too busy, head for the smaller, quieter bay of Biastugal (also known as Pantai Kecil), to the west, with just a few tiny warung. Follow the road past the post office and, just as it begins to climb, take the track to the left. Alternatively, head over the headland in the other direction and take the path from Pura Silayukti to another small, white cove named Blue Lagoon after the snorkeling and diving site located just offshore here.

 Temples of Padang Bai

To the east of Padang Bai, the paved road around the bay climbs up to the headland, which is topped with three temples.
