Sosrowijayan Area is inundated with cheap and cheerful eateries featuring the full spectrum of travel lest favorite.
Jl Sasrowijayan itself has some of the live list options. FM Café (Jl Sasrowijaya 14 draws the biggest crowd, with stacks of atmosphere and an eclectic, well priced menu ranging from nasi goreng to greasy-sport fry-ups. Expect bar girls and live bands at the night wears on, FM Resto (Jl Sasrowijaya 54) offers more of the same.
Atap café & Resto – (Jl Sasrowijayan Gt 113), just down a small always opposite Suri Losmen, is a hip new café with good information food, great pudding and a crowd of trendy, esuriently locals, Slightly less politically correct it is Osama bi coffee which comes served with a hefty slung of trendy and run.
Bladok Restaurant – (Jl Sasrowijayan 76) is one of Sosro’s best. It’s a classy little place bath plenty of Alpine-style woodwork and a cousinly European menu. Gang I and Gang II of Jl Sasrowijayan are also favorites for cheep eats.
Badhot – (Gang II) means ‘creative’ in old Javanese and is perhaps the most stylish cattery on Gang II, with art on the wells and ebullient staff. The big menu starches from pizza and cereals to salad and sate.
Superman’s (Gang I) is one of the original purveyors of banana pancakes and has been around for decades. The owner, Pak Superman, adapted his name, and likewise his food, to suit Western sensibilities. Its offshoot, New Superman’s a bit further down Gang I, is more popular, and has pizzas, steak and Indonesian and Chinese food.
Murni Restoran – (Gang I) is alcohol-free and serves tasty, curies with flaky paratha (Indian style friend bread) and good ice juices.
Legian Restaurant – (crn Jl Malioboro and Jl Perwakilan), upstairs, is more up market and serves Indonesia, Chinese, French and Italian food in a leafy roof-terrace setting.
Nearby, Mal Malioboro wouldn’t be complete without fest food, with western Chains inside and nearby. The mall also has some reasonable cafés such as Ciao, which serves pizza, pasta, cappuccino and ice cream. The top floor has a food stall area.
A whole host of good warung line Jl Pasar Kembang, beside the train line. But Mama’s comes up trumps.
After 10pm, the souvenir vendors pack up and a lesehan area (where diners sit on straw mats) comes alive along the northern and of Jl Malioboro. This is the place to tray Yogya’s famous ayam goreng (chicken which is deep-fried) after soaking in coconut milk) and listen to young Indonesia strumming their guitars into the wee, small house.
